Earning Qantas Frequent Flyer points

The dollar amount of Frequent Flyer points earned via a linked credit card will vary according to the card being used. The difference is not particularly in how many points you earn per dollar for your purchases, but rather how much those points are worth when you come to redeem them for gifts and rewards. This is an important factor to investigate before choosing which Qantas-linked credit card will be best for you.

There is also a difference between the various levels of credit card, such as Classic, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Premium, or Ultimate. It normally works that the higher the level of card the more Frequent Flyer points per dollar you will earn, and the greater associated perks will be offered, but the downside is that the annual fee for these more prestigious cards can be much higher.

Extra points can also be earned when actually spending on Qantas services or products, or those of the more than 25 partner airlines and other partner products. When this happens, you earn points for the purchase, and also points for shopping with these particular companies.

Customers will earn one Qantas Frequent Flyer point for every mile travelled on eligible full economy flights with Qantas, Oneworld alliance airlines and 16 other partner airlines. The airlines that are part of the Oneworld group are: Qantas, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN, Malév Hungarian Airlines, Mexicana and Royal Jordanian.

In total, these airlines fly to 675 destinations around the world, therefore when you are earning frequent flyer points with Qantas, you are earning points that can be used with all of these airlines, and the world completely opens up to you.

Although spending on Qantas services and its partner services earn more points, you can earn by spending on anything. Many people who want to earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points use their linked credit cards to pay for everything, including their groceries, fuel and even household utility bills. Wherever a credit card is accepted, these points can be built up.

Spending Qantas Frequent Flyer points

Qantas Frequent Flyer points are not restricted to being used for Qantas flights or flight on the affiliated airlines. This is a very flexible program, with other travel-related rewards on offer, as well as gift that have nothing to do with travel. Points can redeemed for the following rewards:

Qantas & Partner Classic Awards – Use your Frequent Flyer points for a one-way, return or multi-destination Classic Award which can be taken with Qantas or its partner airlines.

Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Awards – Use your points to book a seat on any Qantas or Jetstar flight with a QF or JQ flight number.

Qantas Frequent Flyer Store – Exchange your points for any one of over 1,200 products in the Qantas Frequent Flyer Store.

Gift & Travel Vouchers – Redeem your Qantas Frequent Flyer points for gift or travel vouchers that you can use in the Qantas Frequent Flyer Store and elsewhere.

Flight Upgrades – Upgrade your seat (if available) on Qantas domestic and international flights (but not Award Flights).

Qantas Club Membership – Use your points to gain access to 250 airline lounges worldwide.

Points Plus Pay – Pay for part of your reward with Frequent Flyer points, and the rest with a credit card payment.
